Pope Francis makes surprise appearance before the faithful at the Vatican

Pope Francis, who is still recovering from pneumonia, made a surprise appearance before the faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square, Vatican City, on Sunday (6/4), RIA Novosti reported.

That day, the congregation gathered to attend the Jubilee Mass for the Sick and Health Workers. The Mass was led by Italian Archbishop Rino Fisichella.

At the end of the mass, Pope Francis appeared before the audience sitting in a wheelchair and using an oxygen tube through his nose to help him breathe.

“Happy Sunday to everyone, thank you very much!” the Pope greeted the congregation.

Previously, Pope Francis last appeared in public on March 23, when he appeared on the fourth-floor balcony of the Gemelli Hospital, Rome, before finally being allowed to go home.

The hospital medical team at the time recommended long-term therapy and rest for two months.

Pope Francis has been hospitalized since February 14, and was diagnosed with a respiratory infection and double pneumonia.
