EU: Trade war, no one wins

The European Union (EU) on Thursday (3/4) responded to the announcement of 20 percent import tariffs by the United States by stating that "there are no winners in a trade war."

"It is clear that all these tariffs will raise prices for consumers," EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said on the sidelines of a meeting of defence ministers in Poland.

He said the EU must now consider ways to strengthen its own defence industry.

"We buy a lot from America at the moment, but we need to diversify the portfolio so that we have the ability to produce here," he said, adding that the EU would also look to other allies for arms supplies.

European countries have supplied more than half of Ukraine's ammunition, but called for faster action, he said.

"All this is going very well, ... we need to provide assistance to Ukraine as soon as possible," Kallas said.

He expressed hope that the meeting in Poland would announce more short-term aid for Ukraine.

"Because the stronger they (Ukraine) are on the battlefield, the stronger their position at the negotiating table," he said.
