Elon Musk hopes US and Europe will implement a tariff-free system

American billionaire Elon Musk on Saturday (5/4) expressed his hope for a "tariff-free" system between the United States (US) and Europe that could "effectively form a free trade zone."

While participating via video link at an event of the League Party -- a right-wing populist party in Italy -- Musk expressed his views to Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini.

Musk said, “Ultimately, I hope there will be an agreement that both Europe and the US should move towards a tariff-free situation, which in my view would effectively create a free trade zone between Europe and North America.”

Musk's remarks came after US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday to impose reciprocal tariffs on countries around the world -- a policy that has contributed to turmoil in global markets in recent months.

The head of the European Parliament's International Trade Committee strongly criticized Trump's decision to impose new tariffs of 20 percent on goods from the European Union.

He stressed that the bloc would respond with “legitimate, proportionate and decisive measures,” and committed to protecting the EU’s democratic decision-making processes and economic sovereignty.
